hi there
i have just decided to change my scopes around on my rifles and found that the bell of my burris ff11 tact 4.5x-14x-42mm scope hits my barrel so i have to change mounts my question is am i better to just get some higher mounts or should i get a 20 moa base that uses weaver mounts .
will this be any advantage as my gun is a 308 and i want to start shooting past 300m

cheers tim

Hi Tim, much depends on how far you want to shoot. If you want to shoot right out to 900 yards or so, then yes, a 20 MOA barrel can take take the pressure right off your scope. Generally, it is a good idea to put a canted base on a .308 for long range work.

Just bare in mind, every once in a while, the 20MOA bases can cause the scope elevation to bottom out. This is usually caused by minor discrepancies in surface finishing of the the receivers from rifle to rifle. In such instances, the front of the receiver will have to be shimmed with brass, applying araldyte (two pot epoxy) both on top and underneath the shim, then mounting the base in place, clearing the receiver threads of epoxy with cotton buds and applying thread locker to the screws. This will result in a very rigid, strong fit.

As always, make sure that the rifle (and yourself) is capable of the level of accuracy required for long range work. The .308 projectiles get knocked around by wind and along with its steep trajectory, allows little room for error. In ultra light weight or poorly fitted rifles, changes in POI in the field due to minor changes in body position and hand holds can be severe. Ideally, you want to be able to shoot around .5" at 100 yards with this rifle from field positions, keeping the extreme velocity spread of hand loads or frangible factory ammunition within 20fps.

Hope that helps a bit.
