Just ordered a Sightron SIII 3.5-10x44mm LRIRMOA for the 35 Whelen. The 8-32X56 was maybe a bit much for the caliber The 3.5-10x44 with illuminated recticle should cover most situations. Hopefully another life time purchase....

Hi Warwick
I had one but not illuminated. I liked the scope but found the turrets easy to nock off zero. After missing a few shots, cause I didn't put my glasses to check, I bought a Night force SHV 3-10 x 42 with covered turrets MOA reticule for my 308, happy with it.

Cheers

Sure thing BOb. THe sole thing I miss in using Sightron scopes is a decent zero stop like the Nightforce and Burris scopes have built into them. That being said, I bugged a tech at Sightron who advised me that you can make one of your own zero stops. Not precise but will let you get back to where your zero should be in case it gets knocked off a bit. Basically he advised to remove the top of the turret and measure the distance to the bottom (he was vague on how to do this( then go to a hardware store and buy a rubber ring gasket the right thickness as well as diameter and put it in there, reinstall the turret etc.

I never tried it, but felt it would get a person close enough and you can or should be able to see your zero and re-adjust. My NF scopes when I set the zero stop are right bloody there with no need to fuss. Really nice.

Just to add here:

I would phone Sightron and ask for something more specific. I rubber gasket is not what I prefer to use, and I have asked them to make a run of scopes with a good mechanical zero stop. So far not happening but if more people roust them out of bed then perhaps.

I realize this is likely to mean a price increase - well from what I have seen they owe us given the recent price increases I have seen, so it would not hurt to call and email them about doing this.

A few wraps of good quality vinyl insulation tape as you're taping the end of the barrel before you go out hunting, should sort that out . Or maybe make a leather cover to dome around the scope tube and turrets. Or invent the first turret bikini.....Or you could just carry your rifle with care and be vigilant!

Or they could improve the scope with zero stop or evencovered turrets.

Only thinking out loud here, I’ve the same scope and the turrets do move.

Once zeroed couldn’t I open the ferret (to re set to zero like normal) but dial it the whole way down to fully closed before tightening the turrets? That way i’d Have a solid zero stop?

Very nice idea Bryan. You probably want to run that past the design team at SIGHTRON in Japan they should know their products better than anyone else or try one of them sales rep...? An alloy or polyethylene shim will do the same thing. Winding down the turret may compress an internal spring and cause an issue with time?

Re: Sightron SIII 3.5-10x44mm LRIRMOA
So I emailed and called sightron in the States.

The guy seemed to have his answer before I explained my question over the phone.

He said I'd need to have target turrets fitted for $67

I said I have resettable turrets? The more I tried to explain that I've resettable turrets the more he switched off from the conversation fully convinced of my stupidity.

I trid a few times to explain, but he was just annoyed that i couldn't understand that if I reset the turrets I'd change the zero!!!!!

So I emailed pictures of what I wanted to do.
He said yes that was his understanding but that that would only work on the Long Range

I emailed him back to let him know the LR in SIII 3.510x44 LRIRMOA

stands for Long Range

Re: Sightron SIII 3.5-10x44mm LRIRMOA
Hey Bryan. When you loosen the turret cap screw. The cap lifts off the top of the turret index splines to allow the turret marks to be aligned with the line and you set it back onto the spline. Tighten the screw to lock the turret to the spline and it's reset..... If you where to wind down the adjuster it will move the scopes zero. The shim is the only way to make your own zero stop. I hope that I have explained that correctly.....cheers. Happy new year. ....
