Hi All,
I am looking at reloading using 208 A-max projectiles for my 300 win mag, after looking at the ADI powder book it says they are getting the highest volicity out of AR2225, should I use this powder or AR2217 or stick with the AR2213SC that I'm using for the 178's? Is there any advantage using the slower powder?
I have a 26' barrel on a rem sendero so I should get higher volicitys than the book says anyway.

Thanks
Mojo

Hi Mojo, one of the greatest virtues of the .30 cal cartridge designs is that most have an excellent case to bore ratio which makes them rather easy to work with. In early days, many competitive shooters used IMR4350 (same burn rate as ADI2209) to drive 180 to 190 grain bullets with excellent accuracy and velocity. ADI 2213 is fairly versatile in the Winnie, certainly worth experimenting with if you have access to a chrony (assuming highest possibles velocities are one of the main goals). You can also try using a standard primer instead of a magnum primer to slow the burn rate ever so slightly. ADI 2217 (H1000) is extremely good for driving heavy bullets in the Winnie, I am not too confident whether 2225/Retumbo will show any vast improvement. Perhaps if you can obtain a sample of 2225 powder, it would be worth trying. Again, I would opt for a slow primer with any of these powders.
Nathan.

Thanks Nathan,
the reason for the high velocity is so that I can get killing power at maximum range, but in saying this I realize that it's not all about speed and will have to loose some in order to get good grouping.
I'll see if any one I know has some AR2225 and give it a go.
Thanks

Hey Mojoey, I've just had a look at the ballatics of that 30 cal, pretty crap eh ! If ya can get the 208 Amax up to 2900 f/sec at the muzzle you will only have 1950 f/sec at 750 yards, PPP. 750 yards...... ya probably can spit further than that.
If ya want to get out to 1000 yards ya best hook up with one of them 7 mills, I've heard they're the bomb. Heard about the Practical 7 ? or what ever they call it, Mate! now that's cool.
If you're trying to think of a good use for ya old .30 tube you could use it as a fire stoker or a tomato stake, in fact if it's not too heavy you could drag it along on a hunt, would be handy for wacking the bolt open when ya tipped a bit to much powder in ya reloads.
If ya want any more tips on this long range shooting caper just ask Uncle Long Shot.

Right, I've had a few shots with the ADI2213SC and have been getting aroung 1" clover leaf groups with the hottest load I've tried (72.5gns) with an average speed of 2940fps the groups were getting better as they got hotter but my shoulder was starting to give up! (after about 35 shots!) i will try the 72.5 again and maybe 73.(these were with magnum primers) I've purchased some ADI2217 and will start a few loads with that also, the ADI manual says max load for a 24inch barrell is 79.0 for 200gn and 78.0 for 220gn so I'll start at 76.5 and work my way up from there.
Nathan, do you think i should use Lge rifle primers on all of these loads?
thanks
