Any 30-06 users?

G’day Guys
I wondering who else uses a 30-06. I would like some opinions on what you think is the best weight hunting projectile & barrel length for around 500-600m on pigs & goats. I was thinking maybe 168g A-Max or 165g SST & 23" barrel?

Interested in any opinions.
Cheers
Bob

Hi Bob, there are a few .30-06 users here- they must be shy at the moment.

Either bullet will do the job, you are on the right track. Another option is the 178 grain A-Max. Any one of these three will produce excellent results at extended range on pigs.

Thanks Nathan
What's your opinion on barrel length? I’ve ordered a Maddco stainless #3 barrel, it’s .650” at the mussel at 26”. My Sako is .650” at 22.5” long it shoot OK, so the Maddco will be a bit stiffer just have to decide how long to cut it? The 22.5” Sako easily sends 150g Interbonds at 3000fps.

Re: Any 30-06 users?
Personally Bob, I prefer a 24" barrel if it is to be used as an all rounder and 26" if it is to be a more dedicated long range hunting rig. Stock pitch and potential recoil also have to be taken into consideration as per my last book with the same topics continuing into the second book.

PM sent with more info.

Re: Any 30-06 users?
my vote is for the 24" barrel unless its away going to be a 500 yard plus rifle. I haven't shot the 178 Amax in the 06 but have in the 308 and 300WSM "wife's rifle" and they worked great, even on an unexpected close shot on a smallish pig in NZ. Thanks again Nathan;) and at home here as well on coyotes and deer out a wee bit (not this hunting season I can't remember what a deer looks like, lol)
Great to hear your building a 30-06, it just doesn't get enough credit these days!! Aj

G'day Faulkner

Thanks for the reply mate, I agree, the 30-06 is a great caliber. I’ve been using one for a few years now, I happened upon a Nice older 30-06 Remington 700 in a HS stock, flash trigger with a big 28” barrel , going to get a new barrel fitted, 2.5-10 Sightron 111 scope, it should be a good setup.

Re: Any 30-06 users?
I have been a 30-06 user for 32 years. I currently own two of them. My model 700 BDL SS likes 150 gr Swift Scirocco,s and my Winchester model 70 likes Hornady custom Interbonds 150 grain. They both will shoot other bullets and loads very well but these are the ones they like best. I have shot a lot of whitetail deer over the years and the 30-06 performs great. The 30-06 shoots flatter than most people think. With todays powders and bullets, the old 06 can be right on the heels of standard .300 Win. Mag. loads. Not bad for a cartridge that is 107 years old.

G'day Barry
I've been using 150g Interbonds with good results out to 400y on Fallow deer, easily getting 3020fps with ADI 2209, still 1g under max in the ADI book from a 22.5" barrel. I think I'll cut my new barrel to 23". I can't get any Lapua 30-06 brass but I can get Sako brass anyone know if Sako brass is any good?

Re: Any 30-06 users?
Hi Bob

Ive been a fan of the 30 06 because its what I call my mice to moose gun. I cant see myself ever hunting anything other larger than a red stag. My reload can push the 208 amax to 2800fps but it kicks to much and have found 2500fps shots into .4moa at 100 yards. This load works well for all my hunting and I work on "BIG IS GOOD". The 06 can do it all like many other rounds can but it still is the bench mark that sets the standard for big game hunting. That is my opinion and cant see myself ever needing anything larger.

Re: Any 30-06 users?
My 30-06 is also my 'go to gun' and l now shoot 180g Partitions for most situations which seems to be a forgiving but robust projectile.
l would also like to give the Amaxs a better run but stocks here in Oz are non existent at the moment.
For plinking it seems to like the Berger 168 Hybrid the best. Preferred powder is also ADI 2209 with Fed 210m gold primers.
As for my brass l use Whin & Hornady with no special prep finding excellent results with the Hornady.
Would like to try some Lapua brass if the budget gets to stretch there because l cannot fault it in my sons 308W, great brass to work with.

Thanks for your reply mate. I've had a few 30-06's, getting a custom one built at the moment. I use Interbonds a lot but Woodleigh's are my favourite, not as high BC as A Max but they certainly work!!!!

Re: Any 30-06 users?
Hi Bob,

Glad to see more .30-06 interest here. Craig Boddington said something to the extent of, "The .30-06's success is based purely on merit". I have to say that I completely agree with him. It doesn't seem to fast for erratic performance, but not to slow to have a terrible trajectory with heavy bullets an reduced power. It's just right - to me at least.

I have to also agree with several comments above too, I believe that 24" is around the ideal barrel length for this cartridge. I would try the 178 grain AMAX as Nathan stated as well. The slightly higher sectional density would certainly help should you encounter a pig closer than you expected. Depending on game weights you might use the 178 as an all-a-round weight. I used the 165 SST factory superformance load last December to take a neck shot on a 10 point white tail buck. The exit wound was around 1-1/2", bang flop.

I haven't had the opportunity to test my hand loads on an animal yet. My load is: 150 grain SST, 60.3 grains of H 4350, Federal GMM primers, Hornady Brass at 3.210" COAL. I average around .6-.75 MOA at 100 yards at 3,060 fps with +- 10 fps spread. It's pretty hot but will shoot as flat as a .270 Win an bores .5" through a .75" mild steel plate at 100 yards. I'm happy to say the least.

Best of luck with whatever you choose to do Bob!

The 30-06 gained my respect very quickley, great cal. Easy to work with, reload and use.
I would also like to build a sendero style rifle in 30-06.
Also looking at the Woodleighs due to good availability, which are you using Bob?

Re: Any 30-06 users?
G'day Guys
I use Woodleigh 130pp for meat, 150pp when I’d rather them not come out 130's go through, bit harder make up? & 180 Woodleigh's on big Samba/Rusa cross Deer. For normal hunting I use 150 interbond at 3020fps for their higher BC.
Here’s a question for you longer range shooters! I use Load from a disk program in my computer, it says at 600yds my 150gn IB at 3020fps shoots 4.5” flatter, 2.5” less windage & hits 12 ft lb harder than 168gn A-Max at 2880fps at 600yds. Just had a look, 150 IB is better even out to 1000yds??? Why go heavy? I know I Bond's would be too hard at long range.

Confused

Re: Any 30-06 users?
G'day Bob,

You need to get yourself a copy of Nathans new book!

Plenty of explanation in there! Costs less than a pack of projectiles and worth heaps more.

I would like to try the Woodleigh 180pp if my stocks of Partitions runout.

Also in my 300wm I'm setting up for closer shots! 208+ for the rest.

I've ordered Nathans book, it hasn't arrived yet. There two types of 180gn Woodleigh’s, one for 308 & 30-06 another for high velocity 300 win mags etc. I've used 180gn Partitions & the 180gn Woodleigh’s On Samba & Bulls, love the Woodleigh’s they kill heaps better in my opinion.

Re: Any 30-06 users?
Hello Bob,

I don't have any insight as to why they shoot flatter. Possibly the increased speed and decent BC of the 150 grain Interbond overcomes the decreased speed and improved BC of the 168 grain AMAX?

I would say you should go heavier because there is a much better chance of having a more consistent and effective wound channel with the 168 or 178 AMAX. As you stated the Interbond would be to 'hard' at that range. 600 yards? The AMAX's or even SST will allow you to achieve adequate penetration and fragmentation at that range further increasing killing performance at extended ranges, much like buckshot from a shotgun. You would be better suited to a 150 grain SST, they are tougher than you might think. I have shot completely though a 7" hardwood tree at 100 yards!

On a side note, have you used any 220 grain pp Woodleighs in your .30-06? I thought they would be a lot of fun for pigs in thick brush at bayonet range! I like the idea of a published velocity range on their bullets.

All the best,

Re: Any 30-06 users?
Hi Drew

I would think the 150 Woodleigh’s are better on pigs than the 220’s, save them for Buff & cattle where you need penetration.
I agree that the 150 SST’s would open up better than the 150 I/Bond at long range, but I do like the I/Bonds for culling Deer for venison out to 300m or so!

Re: Any 30-06 users?
Hi Bob,
I believe you are probably right on the money with the 150's. There is just something about those heavy for calibre high SD bullets that bring out a feeling of nostalgia ha. Makes the .30-06 look something like a .318 Westly Richards from the early 1900's.

Have you used the .30-06 on Buff an Cattle or other heavily constructed animals? How did it perform for you? If so, have you used Woodlieghs or any other flavor of cup-and-core bullet? I don't really buy into the Barnes mono bullet craze.

Culling is always loads of fun, fills freezers for the year!

Hey Drew
The Woodleigh’s are the best projectile I’ve used. They are a bonded bullet and expand around three time the diameter when using 30cal, if you don’t hit heavy bone they retain most of their original weight. I’ve shot Buffalo, cattle, Camels, horses & Samba, with 180gn Woodleigh Protected Point projectiles with a 30-06, with head, neck and shoulder shots, they’ve always done the job for me! With Bulls & Buff if your chasing them or their really stirred up I’d prefer a bigger 45-70 or something like it.

Re: Any 30-06 users?
Hey Bob,

I'd love to see any pictures you have with Woodleighs. I've been looking at them for a long time. I know Nathan would probably like some pics for his .30 cal page in the Wound Data Base.

You've convinced me! I'm going to have to try a box of 180 grain PP's! Ive heard nothing but good things about them. Do they seem to open up fairly easily (like a partition) on longer shots, if you've shot animals at 250-300 yards with the Woodleighs?

That 240 grain .30 cal is something else, I can imagine it looking like a cigar sticking out of the end of the case!

Thanks!

All the best,

Drew Pigott

PS: sorry for momentarily changing the topic of your thread. I haven't spoken to many people that have a great deal of real world experience with Woodleighs.

I don't know how to post a picture but if you send me an email address I could send them to you. I find the Woodleigh’s open up easily like a mushroom but rarely come out. I’ve shot Rusa Deer at 25m and still find them under the skin on the opposite side. The skin is usually pushed off the body and all loose. I’m in Australia are you?

Sounds like good performance to me. I've got some 180 grain Sierra Pro Hunters an Reloader 22 I'm going to load after deer season.

I'm in the Southern US. Completely different quarry than what you have access to. [email protected]
