Getting myself organized

Well I blame you lot for this!!!!!!
having read what you guys are doing and watching Nathans video clips to see what is possible, and having sneak peak at "the books" that a great mate has bought.... just being "good enough" isnt anymore
I bought a bullet puller and pulled my .270 loads apart to salvage the bits out of them, gave old girl a really good clean. put together a few loads to test and went and had a go.
last night was too windy and 6" group at 300yards confirmed that.
today I took GPS to get range right and got set up at 100 yards in riverbed and let a few off down range.
first 3 were factory 130grn corelocts 4" group (and Ive shot 3 deer with bullets from that box)
my usual 130 grn ballistic tip load with 54grns AR2213sc was next 2 shots 1/2" with 3rd pushing it out to1 1/4"
the 170grn speer fenceposts had 2 at 1/2" with 3rd pushing it out to 1 1/4"
going hotter the 130BT with 59.5 was 1 3/4" verticle string
and lastly with 60grn 2 through same hole and 3rd 2 1/2" higher

so I guess Ive still got a lot of work to do !!!! at least I know that to 3-400 my 170grn speer fencepost load will do the job nicely..I think I should tweek that and use it this roar... partitions will be bought when I use them up....thoughts??? suggestions???

Re: Getting myself organized
im in same boat i have been meaning to try some partitions but price is pretty high and have lost my testing range at the moment. if you have no luck ill send you some 150gr interlocks to try.

Re: Getting myself organized
todays effort 2" with the 130s
2 and a bit with 150 partitions....... they wee bit too hot as can just spot extractor marks, primers still look normal so must be hard!!!!!
SO...... guess that 300yards is ethical max till I get it sorted out any better.

I was just reading through your posts Mike, Big call to go straight in with 3 grains above book max!........ You are braver than me.

Is there a similar designed 150 that is cheaper for your basic work up then swap to the Partitions for a final check? Interlocks maybe?

Sorry that should have been 2 grains above not 3!

G'day Mike
I'm with Marty !!! BOOM!!!
Hornady interlocks are similar & half the cost. Come back to 1 grain under and work up from there for an accuracy node, then play with the seating depth.

Re: Getting myself organized
well Ive had rifle since 40 rounds from new, so have done a heck of alot of loads through it over the years....chased velocity at one stage and went hot hot hot..then backed off and went to other extreme and been happy with mild loads for years so wasnt really too big of leap of faith. the only other major vaiable I havent looked at yet..other than shooter himself, is the 2 year old leupold vx1 bought new.....
150 grn group was right of target by 3" so are getting puzzled by horizontal drift which seems to have been issue with rifle for last few years..eg when I re-bedded it the poi moved 18" right. first group (130s) was spot on with cold barrel
150s barrel got warm and didnt want to cool.
will try one more group of 150s first up through cold barrel sometime this week before big weekend up the hill. BIG stags are haunting my dreams
if all else fails I will take the .223 lmao

Re: Getting myself organized
There is so many changed variables Mike, bullet weight is just one small part of it and l would hate to see others try something like that.

I work up all my changes, even if it’s only a few shots at lower 1 grain intervals until l get to my "supposed known" nodes.
Hopefully they work for you on a cool barrel.

5 days to go...last night while giving old girl a good clean, looked at scope and HELLO its moved in rings!!!!! never had that before...vary ring was close to being jammed into rear ring. added tape under front ring moved back to where should be and tightened up again....another few rounds to fire needed now....... man I feel like a rookie

That's a good thing Mike. Fingers crossed this was the major cause of accuracy issues, not the bore.

Re: Getting myself organized
well that took care of the sideways movement. 18" to left were the first two shots!!!!!
got clicking and tried again 4" left then on target, next 2 went beside first to give 1 1/2" horizontal group with the 130 bts.
next 2 were 150 partitions yip 1 1/2" apart as were the 3 170s I fired last.
so after a little trial and error I can safely say...Barrel getting tired..time to start saving as $800 odd is a heck of a hunk of cash for truck driving family man.
that said 1 1/2" should take me to 300???? so did achieve something and a little fine tuning may even get it better.
25" heavier stainless barrel sounds nice...one day.

Re: Getting myself organized
Hi Mike, that will get you to 300 yards. Won't be any room for trick shots though.

Just a thought but if you have a mate in a machine shop, strip the rifle and trigger, then get 2" docked off the barrel for a half dozen beer or such like. Just have the face squared off and then a step down, then squared off again. It won't be fancy but will do the trick and probably get you closer to an inch. Could allow you to save for a bit towards the new barrel. It won't be any worse than now, even if its not super square and it will be a stiffer barrel.

You say that you added tape under front ring. Why? rRngs are not oversized are they?If not ,can they be torqued to keep scope from moving?
Also sometimes if ring is too close to either front bell, adjustment turret or mag ring it will affect movement of adjustments.
if you can keep rings close to half an inch from front bell, adjustment turret and from power ring.Getting the rings too tight on a Leupold scope can also affect the adjustments.
Just tight enough(15 to 20 INCH pounds on calibrated torque wrench)should do the trick.
I had a rifle that wasn,t shooting like it should and scope adjustments were a little sporadic.I had it recomended to me to try loosening up MYx FARMER tightened rings and lo and behold scope adjustments became consistant and groups shrank.
iF THIS DOESN,T HELP THEN
IF you have a Proven scope that holds zero I would give that a try as well.If scope was loose in the rings erector tube springs might have been weakened by recoil and movement of scope in rings .
Wouldn,t take too long to find out by just replacing scope .
Wouldn,t even have to zero rifle as long as it was hitting paper you could just shoot a couple of groups.

Hope this helps
Craig

Re: Getting myself organized
Barrel is 20 3/8TH" now from bolt face...take another 2" off!!!!! WHAT DID YOU SAY...CANT HEAR YOU...lol
the crown got redone when they fitted suppressor not that long ago...40-50 rounds tops
had thought of going that way when just bush shooting but now Ive used it with a can....well she is just such a tamed beast and the x39 takes care of bush hunting needs.
fired a few rounds without can on and nope just too loud, main reason I went down route of fitting cans was to protect what hearing I have left...I cant YET get into groove duckshooting with earplugs/muffs so removing blast from rifles is a good choice I feel.
300 YARDS will be it..for now

Tape under front ring....weaver clip over rings...only time ever had issue was after took off early redfield that had been painted, slight squish and they were fine again...bit of a pain to fit them but this is only time Ive had issue in nearly 30 years on that rifle...killed about 8 scopes..fogging mostly. figgured the piece of medical tape on scope under ring will take out any slack. there is now approx 1/8th" gap before bell and after vari ring.

thanks for sticking with me guys.

Re: Getting myself organized
mike sounds like you know that rifle more then most people know there mrs ha ha.
sounds like its been a helpful learning experience if nothing else.
might just pay to check your barrel crown carefully just in case on the off chance it was damaged when it was redone

Re: Getting myself organized
that was meant to come out in tiny font size eg a whisper....... when discovered it this weekend didnt now weather to laugh or cry.... now locktighted in place...didnt find big stag but got in close enough to spiker (80-100yrds) and tipped it over.
also got a pig from truck with .223 (first rifle I could grab
so a productive weekend of sorts
guess this means more time at range now to see what she is doing...... 1 1/2" with bases that move 2mm.....could be interesting now they tight

Re: Getting myself organized
FINALLY got to re sight rifle yesterday.....was about 5" right and 4" high
got it back to 2-3" high and groups were STILL hovering around the 1 1/2"
but at least she is consistant.
took boys out for hunt today hoping for wobblies and maybe a fallow deer.
loaded up my dwindling supply of projectiles 15 x 130 grn ballistic tips and same of Taipans...NO you cant have whats left!!!!!!!LMAO
well after a late start as mate/guide Rangi was hour n half late arriving we got started.
we headed up hill and for some reason I had inkling/twinge/compulsion to head out n up to left of where we were going to go, no sooner had lad n I crested first spur than we looked up and spotted 6 fallow heading up and away over ridge above us.
with no time to waste it was off with frame pack(new K2 hunter)and cranked up scope, lined up last beasty and let one rip. animal staggered then went down beside Spaniard, sun was in scope so we off up hill to close gap from what google earth tells me was 350yards!!!!
we got up ridge further to 275 (again measured at home) and spotted deer get up, so off with pack again and I tried to line him up but sun directly in scope so got young fella to hold hat plurry near over scope to take shot....that felt better and rolled him down hill.
a short walk up with dog revealed a 3 year old BIG fallow stag. had plurry good look around with pooch but no just 1 animal.
boned out main bits of bone and put him in pack for 2km wander back to wagon.
thanks for all help and encouragement from you all.
I set out hoping to get 3-400 if I could do it and to KNOW limit if not.
lad managed to tip running wobbly over with a few more of the precious Taipans so great day had by all.

Re: Getting myself organized
150 grn partition recovered from big red hind the other day looks great, back half is complete and small piece of front core recovered from beside it. shot was 200ish yards and was in worst possible position somehow deer must have been playing twister at squeeze of trigger (wasnt me doing it) through back leg above hock breaking bone...into gut cutting 6"opening lengthways then pulping lung and finishing up just infront of offside leg. not ideal at all deer didnt suffer for long or travel far as I neck shot it with .223 within 1 minute, she was dead on feet as it was.
bad shooting to be sure but I thought to share how the partition did its job even when we didnt do ours.

Re: Getting myself organized
ok update
bought bedding kit from Nathan &Steph along with a couple of GREAT books.
stripped action out of stock and tried really hard to follow directions.......
got the front n rear bedding job done and give it 8-9/10 as it looks shit hot.
finally got out today to fire a round or 6.
first surprise was that 1st shot actually hit target
2nd surprise was next 2 shots hit within 1 1/2" of first group was only 1" away from where it should've been.
removed can to let it cool a tad gave 4 clicks of windage
re fitted can and fired 3 shots reasonably quickly but making sure of my aim (9x scope at limit at 110 paces) result 3 shots right where they should be and triangle group measuring 28mm from center to center further-est holes
so just a fly turd over the 1" below it if I went inside of holes LOL
thats tightest group Ive shot with .270 for over 10 years
to say Im stoked is understatement.
bought another can of AR3312sc and box of speer hotcore 130s to try out seen as though they said to be good in finicky bores (hopefully old ones too)
big Thankyou Nathan and Steph, you fellas are the best.
