Getting back into bigger game hunting in NZ.. Mainly focused on central Nth Island in NZ, with some trips into Sth Island. Tossing up between 7mm Remington Magnum , 30-06, 270 and 308. Main targets deer - Sika + Reds most of time ..couple times a year some Thar , chamois and Wapiti. Any feedback appreciated.

Its not off topic at all. People need to be aware of the potential dangers and limitations of suppressors.

David - I happened to stumble across a rifle/caliber combination that seems worthy of consideration in your quest for the best all-around rifle. One thing that appeals is that this rifle has a barrel already threaded to accept a suppressor or (heaven forfend) a muzzle brake should you choose to use either in the future. This rifle is also a little heavier (for the caliber) in weight, which will make recoil manageable and help a great deal in making this rifle enjoyable to shoot and practice with. It also comes with a 10 round clip:

I should mention as well that last time I checked, factory subsonic loads were available in the 308 caliber, so if you fitted a suppressor you and your friends could shoot safely without hearing protection using pre-loaded subsonic ammunition or, for that matter, hand loads using trail boss powder and a very high BC (VLD or ULD) bullet.

.270 fan as I have used one for the last 25+ years to take all manner of NZ game Samber,Rusa and Wapity are the only species I havent shot YET.
I used the old girl (mod 70 lightweight..yes the washing machine salesman era model) as my main rifle for most of that time but bought a .223 while shooting a lot of wallabies as easier on shoulder and wallet.
I load my own 130s for out further 300yrds comfortably 500 at a stretch and have simply awesome up close n personal bush loads with 170 grn speers...yes thats not a typo 170 grn round nose speer projectiles.
walk before you run is good advice...very good.
I have fitted gunworks spartans to all my rifles and the recoil/noise reduction is great..the .270 now feels like the .223 unsuppressed and sounds like it too.
If I didnt own the .270 I would have a 30/06 for big stuff and hunting in open country...you can always buy a cheaper rougher cheaper..did I mention cheaper rifle to knock around if bush stalking and save your cannon for Sunday best.
I have a wee 7.62x39mm suppressed for that purpose, all up with wee leupold scope it owes me less than $700 as it shares suppressor with .270 I can buy really cheap loads for either wee rifle to shoot goats, wallabies or long range rocks. when .270 was main/only rifle I just fired less rounds but if you are spending $100 on petrol to go hunting and another $100 on food etc whats a couple of boxes of ammo going to hurt.
