6.5mm 147 ELD-M?

Jonathan Stamper

I’ve read my copy of the Cartridges book, great info. However, it predated the release of the 6.5mm 147g ELD-M.

Are there any field results on game yet?

I am looking for a single bullet for the 6.5 Creedmoor for whitetail deer from 20 to 600 yards. Does this bullet fit the bill?

Ha ha. I'm sure that the 6.5 Bleedmore will work for you with the right expectations.

Re: 6.5mm 147 ELD-M?
I got some partitions loaded up for hunting over the weekend with my 11 year old son. Only going 2600fps so far but well accurate enough.
My son shot a pretty good boar estimate near 50kg at 160yards, quartering away looking back at him, shot sounded like a good solid hit, but it ran for 10-20 meters then stopped briefly not long enough for my son to fire again, got up again and disappeared from sight. When we went to find it it it was another 50meters from where we lost sight of it. On inspection the bullet went through 6 ribs then through the lungs and I believe the rear cup exited lower neck.

Probably should have waited for the pig to turn side on but given the opportunity I think he did very well, we have talked a lot about shot placement with different angles.

Anyway pretty impressed with the partition on our first outing.

Well done Mark Its a pretty reliable bullet.
Here's pictures of the 75 yard A-max shot deer I mentioned before.
As you can see its not good in close ant high speed!!! Good for wild cats but you gotta have pinpoint accuracy

Thanks Warwick, wow thats crazy.

I'm looking forward to trying it on a some deer this year, will try work up to some faster loads, hopefully can get above 2700fps.

BTW, thanks for your wise tips earlier.

Yes it just shows how important it is to know how your chosen bullets work. How lucky we are to have all of Nathan and Stephs hard earned and professionally documented Data on so many different Calibers and projectiles and 5 books worth of other essential information covering so much in fantastic detail..... https://www.ballisticstudies.com/shop.html

Here's the other pictures I took when I got that spiker. It was only 150 yards from the house. below the dam. I was on the lawn talking with my hunting mate around 4pm i looked over the bank from the lawn and said " Hey Collin guess what I'm looking at"? He says what? I told him, and he says. Well best you stuff it in the freezer lad .........I didn't have any Partitions loaded so Decided to use A-max And knowing from reading the books about the surface blow up in close I aimed accordingly and was Lucky to get away with it.......

He was a young animal and forgot that to jump the fence he needed to jump from top of the mound. this is where the deer jump from the bush into the farm to get across the farm into the adjacent block of bush.......I felt a bit bad but the farmers call them grass thief's. and in a night 20 odd deer eat a heap of good pasture. Ive heard of mobs of 60 in this area....... Nope I wont tell ya! I dont fancy being tied between a Bulldozer and truck n ripped in two...." Loose lips sink ships"

Re: 6.5mm 147 ELD-M?
I hear you Warwick. I'm glad you got that shot away.

I'm currently looking to develop a second load for in close. Previously my Z-max load was traveling closer to 2650fps so some distance didn't do it harm for shots, plus most of the things I shot weren't big. But knowing I am targeting deer means that my current load traveling at over 2800fps might not fare so well.

I have some Sierra 150gr GameKings (30cal) which are quite old so age annealed but I am wondering if it is worth hitting them with a blow torch to soften them up and make them less fragmentary... I'm worried the lead will boil over though. Maybe even inverting them in a pan of water and hitting the boat tails with the flame to anneal the rear and have it hold together while the top can fragment...

who knows? Perhaps even just loading them to a lower velocity. But then hydrostatic shock goes away...

Truth be told I'd love to get some Woodleigh 180gr Protected Points. These are great projectiles. They are pricey though. And I don't have the budget right now.

Perhaps the answer lies in working within the limits I have. For now the Z Max is what I have. For close shots targeting the neck or very forward legs and chest.

Fortunately I have yet to have an issue.

Re: 6.5mm 147 ELD-M?
You are dead right there Warwick, thanks heaps to Nathan and Steph, a lot of us don't get to shoot a whole lot and hunting isn't on most of our back door steps, but we get the benefit of years of experience and knowledge from Nathan and you guys here, it's awesome! Thank you.

Hey Andrew you talk about age annealed bullets, that's something I've been looking into but struggled to find much info on, a friend's dad gave me a bunch very old 6.5 and 7mm projectiles. I've been hesitant to use on game but tried one on a feral sheep, quick kill at close range but bullet broke up into small granular fragments...always good for practice at the range though.

Cheers

Hey Warwick,

Sorry for late reply. I'm temporarily up in Orewa at the mo after selling my house in Tnga. Looking hard out to buy again down there so will be in touch when I have.

Had same results with Amax up close but still does the trick / has not let me down. Pretty mean on head shots on fallow too..... ;-)

Shot a large red spiker down Journey's End a few years ago at 300 yds & the 140G Amax worked perfectly. Hilar shot. Dropped on the spot

My no is 021 0274 7354 if ya wanna make contact.

Sorry to others re: relevance.

Cheers,

Jon
