Rebarreling Rem 700 VSSF II to .308 - 20"or 22"??

Ricardo LaborinGents, I'll be rebarreling my varmint rig to .308, which funny enough, will do for everything. Notes:- Current rig is carbon copy of Sendero but in Short Action (8.5lbs current bare weight) - New barrel keeping the varmint contour with fluting - Want to carry it around everywhere - Will place STAC 4-16x on top - As per the books, 1-10" twist What say ye on lenght? I'm stuck between 20" and 22". Thank you in advance. Saludos. |

IainRe: Rebarreling Rem 700 VSSF II to .308 - 20"or 22"??22"Barrell length is the easiest, most stress free path to a little extra velocity, and the up front weight might help balance. I had my 308 cut at 24", fully intending to chop it to 22/23 after I had used it a bit. At 24 it swings and balances beautifully and doesn't feel at all unwieldy, so it will be staying at 24". And, as I have said before, 22" can be turned into 20" should you so decide later, but the reverse is not possible. |

I'm in the process of ordering the HS Precision barrel, but it takes a long time to get to Mexico.There seems to be an in-between profile called the "Pro-Hunter" with .750" diameter at the Muzzle, would that one be a good fit on the current Sendero stock? Martin TaylorRe: Rebarreling Rem 700 VSSF II to .308 - 20"or 22"??Great informative video my friend, well done!I have used this 308 in the field and its noticeably easier to handle than my 26" Rem Police with the same optics. One side note, the muzzle report/blast is noticeably louder with the shorter barrels when shooting under a tin roof at your local range. Having shortened my barrel to do some testing it was amazing to hear & feel the difference. |
