Cutting Edge MTH in 338 WM

Nigel MustoIn the UK there is a very high likelihood that a ban on lead will be introduced at some point in 2020. Not going to argue the rights and wrongs, just have to deal with it.The ranges we shoot over are sub 400m so no long range work, but I'm looking for the best performing non lead at terminal velocities down to 2200 fps. A high BC is preferable as it keeps that TV up and minimises wind drift. I have experience of the Barnes LRX and TTSX driven quickly in the past, 3000fps plus, and whilst performance inside 250m has been very good, when you get out to 300m plus they are not as good as the ABLR/ELDX bullets in terms of quick kills. I have recently come across the Cutting Edge MTH range. My 338 WM is primarily a Boar gun, sub 60m. However, I also want to use it next year in Africa where ranges are longer and the quarry is larger. The 225 CE MTH is looking pretty appealing as it is semi frangible and high BC, so I think it has a good chance of performing better than the Barnes. Any experience of the terminal performance of this bullet out to 400m? And if it's negative what is the best non lead alternative out there? Thanks for your help. |

Nathan FosterRe: Cutting Edge MTH in 338 WMHi Nigel, yes the Barnes can be problematic, more so with some current batches / materials that may also fail to expand at high velocity. I took some footage some time ago but it is too saddening to share publicly.Yes, try the Cutting Edge bullet. But also keep an eye out for Lehigh Defense as they are also really working hard to make bullets which dump high energy. Nigel MustoRe: Cutting Edge MTH in 338 WMThanks for coming back Nathan. Trying to get hold of anything "different" over here is a nightmare but CE do have a UK distributor who is quite well stocked. I will give them a try and see how they perform compared to the AB's and the TTSX.What the shooting community really need is someone like you to conduct your usual thorough independent tests on the new monolithic bullets as I suspect they are improving at pace and lead has a limited life span in most parts of the world. |

Here nz one case is lead shot in shotguns, 12 gauge has had lead ban around waterways for a long time but sub gauges were exempt because there wasn't lead alternatives available. Now there's a semi decent supply of steel shot in 20 gauge etc they have banned lead shot. Lot of traditional materials and processes have lasted decades if not centuries because frankly they are the best method or material. Push for new things can often come down to greed, everyone to appoint is making the best product they can the cheapest they can so how do you sell an alternative product? You have to convince people it's better or take away other options. Seldom will you hear about greenies complain about amalgam fillings or pest control poisons but they scream blue murder of lead projectiles and diesel vehicles. Just my observations. Outer limits projectiles in Australia has picture of what happens to their projectiles at different velocities and that drives home the issues. Good on them for publicly showing it thou |

Luis VazquezRe: Cutting Edge MTH in 338 WMHi Nigel:Another option is Hammer bullets, they are going to start shipping internationally come January 2020 from what I've heard. You can contact Steve there and he'll give you more info. Their bullets shed 4 petals (the tip) and the rest of the projectile keeps penetrating. I've been doing lots of research on mono's to avoid the lead in our game, and from all I've read and testimonials if I do decide to use a mono these would be my choice.
