Hi guys I had a phone call from my brother this morning he is having trouble with his 7mm08 I think it's a marlin he has had for several years it used to shoot ok but has recently started shooting about 5 inch groups he has tryed changing his load with no improvement I suggested he give it a good scrub and polish which he has tryed with no improvement .
As it is a synthetic stock and unbedded I suggested he remove the pressure lugs out of the for end and do a glue and screw as per the book to see if that helps he said he can see some wear where the tang sits so possibly he is getting some pinching from the stock
Any thoughts or ideas

With such a huge group like that I would guess, scope or something is loose.

Check the crown is not corroded or damaged.... also that the barrel does not show any bulges etc....

Hi Grant.
How hard is it to see a bulge, or what is the best way to look for one?
Will it show up on the outside?

It might be best to take it to a unsmith for that. Otherwise a bore scope will do it but a but pricy to buy.

Hey Jason. Make a list of checks. Starting with the easiest thing to check working to the hardest. Write out what you find and tick them off as you go. Had a mates 22 a few years ago and when you ran fingers down the outside of the barrel there was a noticeable bump 6 inches from the tip. No one on the Farm had felt it. The amazing thing is that the cleaning rod would fall through the bulged part . They still use it 😞 like that.

I am having a similar problem with my 22 at the moment. I am fairly certain it's the ammo though I am going to change it next time I go out.
If it doesn't change my results I'm going to cry though.

If your bore is nice and clean, use your cleaning rod and wrap a tight patch around the jag.... if its tight enough to feel resistance through, as you push it through the bore you will feel any bulge if its there.
alternately if your look along the barrels contour into some good light then you should see any deviation on the surface that may indicate a bulge.

Bit late I know, have been off in our Alpine area...... thought l would offer my dramas with this anyway.

If it was a X series Marlin, the OME Alloy picatinny rail is soft as butter and the retaining screw heads chop out their seats.
Even though the recoil energies are very different our 06 XL7 went from moa to 4 in no time.
Epoxied on a Weaver rail and it's never missed a beat since.

I believe the Win M70 rails fits the xl7 too which is handy.
