Thomas Kitchen

hi guys.
so i got more then one gun safe in a wardrobe and i was thinking i might get one of those little bar heaters/dampchasers.
my question is if i just put the one heater in the wardrobe will it help or will i get moisture in the safes as the air inside the safe might be cooler then air on the outside?
by have wardrobe warm will it mean there's less chance of moisture to be in the wardrobe to effect gun safes?
the cost will add up if i put a heater in each gunsafe.

Hey Thomas.
As long as the temperature of your guns is higher than the Dew point. The moisture in the air won't condensate on the steel of your shooting irons. A 15 watt light bulb mounted a 3rd of the way off the bottom and left going in the safe will keep it warm and dry and keep the air circulating from the airs convection or a cupboard heater will do the same thing but won't light up the inside. A light bulb and some cable wired to a switch will do fine. You can get fancy and fit it with a thermostat with the sensor bulb at the bottom of the safe so that the bulb switched off once the air got to the set temperature and back on when it cools. If both safes are the same size you can cheat and have a bulb in the safes running off one thermostat in one of the safes? As the same wattage bulb should heat the air at the same rate if the volume of air is the same in the safes..
I think if you heated the cupboard the safes would take a lot of heat to get the air inside warm. You only need to heat it above the dew point temp to stop the condensation? Humidity at high Temps those steamy tropical days may require a dehumidifier? To extract the water out of the air.

You should always dry out a wet firearm before locking it away otherwise you're putting water into the safe ! Not good. I'm going to have to seal the wood on the 35 Whelen so it doesn't soak up any water if hunting in the rain. Cheers mate
