I have a leupold vx6 on my vartarg, it comes with a free CDs dial, you send off your load data and they machine it for you.. I have yet to do this however as in order for this to work you really need to know your perfect load, and know that the BC of your bullet is true. If you just go by the advertised BC then you may find that at longer ranges your custom dial is out. I will do it eventually but I need to double check the drop on my favourite load first...

It's a nice idea, but it will only be as good as the data that you give them....

Hi Phil I set one up on my brothers vx3 tikka 25-06 we confirmed drop data then sent info off and I've use that rifle to shoot rabbits at 400 and goats at 600 yard (turret stops there) and it's been bang on. Not sure if they would do the same out to 1000 tho a lot more comes into it out long tests will tell tho

Thanks guys yes need to sort out best load yet so will do that.Liked the idea of simplicity out to 400/500 is it only Leupold,Swaro and burris doing these turrets?? I guess a mildot recticle would work too once you work out the drops at range.

Re: Your view CDS or normal turrets on scope
I don't like these turrets made for the instant gratification generation. They can work OK, but if you change bullets or the environment changes or if you change angle but do not have angle compensation in your range finder, the turrets are rendered inaccurate to one degree or another.

I can understand CDS for a designated Marksman who may be called on to engage multiple targets with plenty of mag capacity and plenty of room for elevation errors, but this is an entirely different subject.

A range of 400 yards is not that far and does not require a great deal of math and does allow some room for error. A CDS turret will work fine.

Up to you really. What you have to ask yourself is what you really want to achieve long term. If you really want to shoot long, then I would say- learn to do this properly. The worst situation is when folk sit on the fence. They say they don't want to shoot past X range, but then do so anyway because they have the zoom- but without the optimum tools or skills for this. The CDS more or less buys into this. I want to shoot long- but I really don't care how or what is actually going on. I just want.

I am with Nathan on this. A scope that cannot be reliably dialed into hit your target is not desirable. Where I live in norther BC we may be hunting one day at 1000 feet and another week up around 6 to 7000 feet along with a wide range in temperature variations.

CDS reticles would be no help for you if you see the Chadwick Ram at 650 to 800 yards out, but I know many people would try.

Re: Your view CDS or normal turrets on scope
Thanks for your input I agree,an accurate rifle first, range time/field shooting to get everything right then you can go hunting.A couple of weekends ago spotted a good chamois buck, ranged at 396m,fairly brisk right to left wind decided way to far to attempt shot with my .308,buck bedded down, stalked up to 250m he had gone thats fine.Like the 2-7 burris on my .308 as good for bush stalking etc, looking at putting a different scope on my 7mm08 for both point and shoot and longer shots on wallabies, chamois etc.

Phil, thank you for posting!

I came down the same track as you, first trying to purchase a "Ballistic Turret" Swarovski since it seemed like the right tool to reach out to 500mts, then coming across the Forums and the Book Series, basically opening my eyes across the board. I just ordered a Sightron S-TAC 3-16x42mm dial capable scope, albeit still in duplex (because the MOA3 is too thin), but eager to learn to dial for longer punches (outside the 3" rule).

I advise going down the same route and, as the guys say, learning the dial up for multiple ranges/loads.

Saludos!!
