ELD-X Projectile Jump

Charlie Willcox

Hi all.

Just starting to work up some loads with the 162 gr ELD-X .284 in 7mm Rem Mag.

Has anybody experimented with these and willing to give some data on recommended projectile jump for these? My limitation will the detachable magazine in my A bolt and dare say there will be some jump...

Any help or pointers appreciated.

Cheers

Re: ELD-X Projectile Jump
Yo Charlie, thanks for educating me about a new bullet. I know about Berger VLD bullets which are a little difficult to load unless you know about bullet jump. The only rifle I shoot any more is a 6 PPC and I use bullets made by Cecil Tucker, Odessa, TX. In this game the bullet spacing with the lands can make you or break you, some rifles seem to not shoot unless the bullet is jammed. My rifle built by Ed Adams, Albuquerque likes the jump carefully set by experiment along with powder charge. The rest is up to you, shot several small groups in competition so I know the jump in my rifle is critical.

Found a good article at the following: http://www.longrangehunting.com/forums/f19/eld-x-bullets-jump-no-jump-lands-168305/

Was in New Zealand once on the way to Australia, beautiful country but I don't eat mutton.

Good luck.

Hi Charlie, sorry I know this is late.

Seat to suit your mag box. This will possibly create a relatively long jump. But you will need to measure the max COAL first. Always check Brownings due to their occasional short throats. It would be good if you can find an accurate load that feeds from the mag rather than single feeding.

For accuracy, focus on the concentricity of your ammo rather than trying to seat close. The ELD-X can shoot well with 10 thou / .2mm jump but like any bullet, can require experiments at 20 and 40 thou and can also shoot well at short COAL's with select loads as long as the ammo is true. I suspect you will have over 80 thou jump when seated to feed through the mag. But you need to measure this to be sure. All of these factors including concentricity are discussed in my reloading book.

Start way down low with your loads as the ELD-X can generate high pressures. The X-Bolt has no camming power with its short lift so you don't want to be stuck looking for a fence batten to lift the bolt and extract a sticky case. Worse still in a short throat Browning. In other words, go carefully.

Re: ELD-X Projectile Jump
Thanks Nathan. I've got a decent throat on the barrel which is a 30" MAB fitted to my old A Bolt. The barrel actually features in your rifle accurising and maintenance book with the bad fire cracking. This polished out in the end and checked out ok with a boroscope... I have ended up seating to suit the mag which you recommend so that's cool. I have also just bought your reloading book. Cheers!
