600 yds range

Very happy to report that I went out to the rifle range today and managed a 1.4 MOA 10 shot group at 600yd. The grouping was roughly 220mm. The score was 54.2 (That means a total of 54/60 with 2 shots in the centre target). The first round I had ended up with a score of 49.1, I didn't pay enough attention to get a group measurement though as the targets are odd sizes. I think they are set up for milliradians but were being used on an imperial range (yards vs metres).

I can't remember the full rifle set up, custom stock and barrel (spiller or stiller action maybe? or maybe the barrel was that brand?) Nightforce 8-32 scope

I was using a 308 that had been set up for F class shooting (makes the group seem less impressive now right?) And was shot from a rest (front and rear) in the prone position.

Was using the Winchester Super-X Palma loads (155gr projectile).

Nonetheless, I was very happy with the effort. Not bad for a first time. I held onto the fore end even though the guy, whose rig it was, was trying to get me to hold onto the front rest adjustment handle. I ended up telling him I was just trying to get a handle on the recoil... Which did actually feel more heavy on the shot I took with the hand on the adjuster rather than on the fore-end. Rifle high and wide on my shoulder, breathing controlled, hand ready.

I noticed I was going to flinch on the first shot (I've never shot a centrefire before) but remember the words from the book, reset myself, came back ready to fire just accepting that recoil was going to be part of the deal. Which wasn't too bad, very very manageable given the heavy weight of the rig.

Cheers everyone for the encouragement, and especially Nathan for your work and kind words along the way.

Re: 600 yds range
Hi Andrew, sounds like a Stiller action.

If you eventually pick up a short heavy barrel .308 hunting rifle as you have been entertaining, you'll find recoil is not really all that different. Sure there is a difference, but not anything earth shattering. These days I find the recoil (again talking about 20-24" heavy barrel) to be extremely light, like shooting a .22, mostly because the very heavy magnums make the .308 seem and feel extremely small by contrast. So hopefully you can take this as a sign that if you purchase a short heavy, all will be well.

Not to be disrespectful to the F-Class guys you have been working with, but you can achieve the same results as you did yesterday with a fat barreled hunting rifle. As long as the rifle is set up correctly and you do your part, you can expect these results and better once you have practiced and as the wind allows. It was not fair of them to say that this could not be done with anything less than an F-Class rig. I have been teaching clients and readers how to shoot with extreme accuracy for many years now. This also includes flyweight rigs, though these cannot handle 10 rapid shots. Perhaps this is what your guys were concerned about during your previous chats as such shooting does cause a lot of heat and wear.

9" (1.4 MOA X 1.047 X 6) is very good for a first attempt at 600 yards.

Re: 600 yds range
Cheers mate,

I was fairly impressed with myself. I know it was an F-Class rig set up with the rests and the like but your teachings from the book series really gave me the confidence to get in there and have a go. The wind and mirage were all over the place too. Left and Right, still to about 35km/h. But the whole point was to have a go and see how it went.

The guys were very friendly and accommodating but in previous conversations they do have a narrow view of LR shooting. Stabilising the stock and bedding the action on a Tikka will be on the cards and then practicing over a pack at the range.

On a different note, there was a guy with a 7mmRM (30" barrel) and a guy with a Sako Hunter (20") barrel. Both guns were making around the same amount of noise. I was surprised at the difference barrel length can make to the sound of the rifles.
