Not So Precision...

Andrew Murray

I'd like to share a new low with you all...

Recently, a "pro-shooter" fiddled with our .22LR CZ452's sights. It's got a 3-9x40 Nikko Sterling on top.

My dad took it away shooting at his mate's property in Central NSW, hit everything he pointed it at. He then took it to our local range, where he was only allowed to shoot prone which for him isn't very good, coz he's old and stiff and it's a small .22. Now, a well intentioned man I'm sure, fiddled with scope to help him get on target...

Well I took it out today to see where the scope had been moved to and I'm pleased to announce that I did not hit the paper at all out of 20 rounds. Admittedly I did not have a spotting scope on hand and was shooting prone without a front rest but did use the sling but still managed to shoot the worst I've ever shot!

I'm very tempted to blame the scope but I'm also aware that it could have been on my part, but surely not that bad.

Thankfully one of the crew there has invited me back to sight it in properly on the weekend before the club's competition shoot.

Goodness me! A new low! No hits on an A4 piece of paper at 100yds.

Top that!

Ouch! That's gotta hurt. But I can sympathize with Dad. Foolishly, I tried to do the proper prone with a .22 last week. Let's just say that I am glad it was on my front porch, and not somewhere in public. And why for heaven's sake would the gun club make your Dad shoot prone? Is this a range regulation?

Yeah I'm not sure man... I think it is a regulation but having said that, there was a guy shooting from a seated position today, and a guy using a table as well. Maybe it depends who is rostered on as range control officer?

Re: Not So Precision...
why 100??????
start at 25 yards.......the same goes for a centrefire...if you cant see bullet hole at 25 yards there is a major problem, you do less walking and for most centrefires if you on at 25 you should be somewhere close to about right at 100.
100 yards with .22lr is a long way, save yourself a heap of hassle and find shorter range to start with,

Re: Not So Precision...
The guy who invited me to come back is going to set me up on a 25 yd range they have set up especially for sighting.

It's an interesting situation, I was there with a Hunting Club that has been lent use of the range by the rifle club, so full functionality is not part of the deal. The hunting club only shoots at the 100yd mound.

The Rifle Club meets on the weekends and the guy has let me come back, even though I'm not a member, that's when I'll sight it in properly again. I'm just worried about where this other guy has dialed the scope to... Hopefully it should just a measure of winding it back to where it was.

Re: Not So Precision...
definitely take a good rest with you and as Mike say's start at 25,
bore sight before and probably zero at between 50 and 75m,
I zero 22's at 50m as I am usually using the 22 spotlighting rabbits at no further than 50m
regards mark
