I am looking for some advise on what would be the optimum commercial cartridge for me to use on Big pigs over 400m. I am using a Remington 700 .308 with a Burris Ballistic scope. Currently been using Remington CoreLokt 150 grain but have found whilst it does knock them down a number are able to get up again. Any adise appreciated. Cheers

Hi Paul, thsat really is a bad set up. A bullet designed for close to medium range work, a scope designed for the instant gratification crowd and bingo- a turd. It is good to see you wanting to improve on this.

I have put a break down of cartridge selection in my second book (long range cartridges) but you can also use the KB to an extent. To be honest, it would be good to see you read all three books as you begin to push ranges out further. There are so many aspects to cover and you have already seen what happens when you go the fast route.

Apart from this, there are few magnums that will do the business including the 7mm Remington Magnum and .300 Winchester Magnum, each loaded with Hornady SST factory ammunition. But- you really need to consider hand loading as your next rifle may not shoot factory ammo well, Don't say you don't have time. Its not OK for an animal to die extremely slowly. Don't look for easy outs, you owe it to the animals you hunt.

Apart from this, there is far too much to cover in post sorry.

Once you start reloading your ammo, you'll wonder why you waited so long. There's something satisfying about making a kill with a round you made.

Re: Long range Big Boars
and need to define BIG pig.....a 180lb captain cooker boar is a big pig to me and Ive shot a fair few that size with 30/30 at up to 150 yards and out to 200-250 with .270 both rifles using old school winchester silvertip factory loads
now a sow is/can be a big pig too but in theory easier to kill as no sheild to contend with....... from what I ve been seeing 250-400lb would be big in land of Oz and in Texas.... well any one got a .50bmg???? as they have some HUGE pigs there.
indeed the humanitarian aspect HAS to be considered.
