Who Hunts Long Range?

Friends,

I'm curious who hunts long range on a regular basis, and where you do your hunting? I'm very new to it and still learning the bare basics. I've not taken an animal past about 300 yards yet. I'm from the plains of Texas. Lubbock area. Plenty of open spaces to be sure.

Re: Who Hunts Long Range?
300 yards is long range for most people as well as for me under most circumstances in the field. I'm improving my skill and regularly hit 8" steel dingers at 600, but unless conditions are perfect wind wise I would likely wound in the field at this time. I think that long range hunting requires a significant amount of skill in all aspects of shooting, rifle accuracy, reloading and testing for repeatable results to know your limits. I'm almost 60 and have been hunting deer in SE Arizona for 43 years. I'm seeing more deer killed at 400 yards as technology improves over the last 15 years. Technology helps a lot and you can harvest game and also wound at much further ranges than in the past.

I bought Nathan Fosters books and they have made a huge difference in my shooting and reloading technique and field accuracy in a very short time, though I was not just getting started. I highly recommend you buy the books, read carefully, apply yourself rigorously and learn your personal limits experimentally. The books are a wealth of information that you will not find so condensed anywhere else to my knowledge. You will save more in time, ammo and useful gun life and avoid bad investments, so you really can't afford not to buy the books considering. You will note that all the books are titled starting with "The Practical Guide", and they are precisely practical.

Best,
Mark

Re: Who Hunts Long Range?
Ive shot n eaten close to 50 deer average range would be 50 yards
pigs about same range
wallabies out to 500 on a good day
any duck over 40 yards is long range
in last 18 mths Ive had fallow at 400ish and red stag 250ish both went down thanks to added confidence in my main rifle since rebidding it with Foster kit and reloads that are better than before again thanks to influence from here.

Once you have the proper equipment for long range, then comes the practise and lots of it. Start short and work your way out. You'll find your limitation for you and your rifle. I'm comfortable at 1100 yds if wind conditions are right. Will move out to 1200 and 1300 yds in the upcoming season. Good luck.
PS- Long Range becomes an Addiction :-)
