Am I the only one that thinks the following observation is funny?

I have, many times heard arguments, often heated, over calibers. 270 or 06, 9mm or 45 acp, 06 or 7mag. it seems silly, yes, but even more so when you consider that I have never, ever, heard arguments and rarely even mention of bullets. my grandfather and great uncle used to argue 270 or 3006 around the campfire while they were to drunk to do anything but argue, i remember them arguing about weather studded tires or snow chains were better on a pickup. i cant even imagine them sitting around the fire at deer camp saying "nosler partitions are the best dam deer bullet made!"
"&@&! ing &@$! the ballistic coefficient of the accubond retain more velocity!"
i have always laughed to myself a bit thinking of that. Am i alone?

It's actually very funny. Sad in a way, as well. Most people are experts when drinking, and if you don't believe them, ask them. It's always a case of "Bigger, Better, More"! Always. To make it even more fun, next time you are sitting around the fire, say something so inane that the experts can't help by prove you wrong, and just listen to the idiocy that spews forth.

Doesn't the same happens with so many things?
Most consumers are just that consumers and they like to think they got the best product, the best deal and the coolest.
More people go and buy based on fashion and belief than a deep understanding of the product. Basic questions like what we need and specially why are never asked.
So consumers in the shooting world are not exception.

Prior to deer opening season the local ranges are very busy with folks zeroing their rifles. I would say about two thirds of them do not have their optics or ergonomics properly setup from get go but they go and shoot and luckily the game will be close like most times in the northern thick woods.

One would think people would take some time to educate themselves and read a little but like cars and electronics enthusiasts, the main stream are more eager to simply use the stuff w/o knowing all the possibilities, with a few exceptions.

When is the last time you read an electronics manual from begining to end?

A friend of mine told me this joke...

What is the definition of Geek?

Eloy, you hit on a good point also that most poeple simply want to argue that what they ended up with as being the best. in a larger city about 50 miles north of me two drunks got in a heated argument over weather the ios or android operation system was better for a phone. that is what started the argument that ended with one of them being killed by getting stabbed

its crazy what people will argue over.
calibers and dog breeds are hunters favourite.
i love when people want to go from something like a 7mm-08 to a 7mm rem mag for better performance but yet they run the cheapest ammo rather then getting the most out of the 7-08 etc

It's a strange world. When I was working in Mali west Africa last year the locals where very different than us westerners. Probably because they were too poor and therefore didn't have anything to argue about? We are so lucky to have the luxury of choice and obese amount of selection. If I really look at myself I am lucky to have what I have. Thomas I think you're onto something when you say that getting the most out of the rifle that you have. Sadly most people don't like the effort required to become knowledgeable and technically informed?
