Hey guys & girls,

Im thinking of having my vz24 action rebarreled and have done some research on whats common, but I'm keen to out it out on here and see your thoughts? Irs currently an 8x57, so for easiness sake I was thinking of going to 7x57. I was keen on 6.5x55 but was told by gunsmith of potential feeding issues.

What would you guys rebarrel it to?

cheers,
Grant

Re: mauser rebarrel options.
Have you thought bout the 284 win you should have enough length to seat 162grain projectiles. Someone on here will hopefully be able to tell you the ins and outs

Re: mauser rebarrel options.
what do require of finished rifle????
big/angry stags etc up close????
deer at 0-350 yards?????
pin point accuracy for deer 0-600 yards?????
ease of loading/ammo off shelf/projectile choice???????
something different to everyone else?????

Re: mauser rebarrel options.
Thomas - good suggestion, its the first time I've seen it mentioned so I'll throw it into the equation.

Mike - I'm looking for a rifle that'll shoot 400yds max, most shots will be from 50yds to 300yds. I'll be hand loading for said cartridge. It would be nice to have something a little different but at the same time it would be nice to stick with a military cartridge - but thats not a massive sticking point.

The 7x57 seemed to tick most boxes, but I'm definitely open to suggestions.

Cheers guys,
G

Re: mauser rebarrel options.
sounds like a good option to me.......... Im a .270 man myself but cant say much bad press gets thrown at the 7x57 in fact a heck of a lot of guys love them to bits...they cant all be wrong.
big fat flat or round nose for the close, big animals at a moderate pace and a sleek spitzer of some sort for longer/more precision work.

Re: mauser rebarrel options.
You got a lot options here. From memory you can do a 30.06 but not a 270 or 280. There's also the x62 variants to. Like Mike has been saying work out what you want to shoot at what distance with what projectiles and work backwards. I still vote the 284 thou as you should be able to use a maxs and Sst with enough mag length. There's plenty of 6.5x284 brass around to work with and dies are easy to get.

Re: mauser rebarrel options.
As we've all suggested to others asking the same what cal questions ? I find it hard to ignore the 30-06 ....... vast selection of projectiles. Good sized case's. Good barrel life and nice to shoot. Easy to reload. 100 years of use and development. A nice boring cartridge that's going to work for you. Yawn! Next?

Re: mauser rebarrel options.
Im a .270 man myself Mike - last four rifles have been. :)

I've spoken to the gunsmith today and he's going to get back to me with what barrels he has in stock. He's got quite a few military barrels but unsure of exact calibers and conditions, also has ex target barrels but mainly if not all in 30 caliber.

I've always thought about owning a 30-06 one day but im not sure if the magazine length in the mausers will suffice for the longer projectiles. Factory rounds are no issues, but ill solely be reloading.

Thomas I checked out 6.5-284 brass....,. I nearly fell of the bloody couch! Not cheap!

Re: mauser rebarrel options.
looking at brass prices norma brass 100 308win is $150 100 6.5x284 is $182
i run norma brass in my 270win and thats around the $147 mark.
think its more the fact the yanks don't make it is the problem

how long is your mag? have you got nathans cartridge book he list most of the c.o.a.l's in there

Re: mauser rebarrel options.
Yip got the cartridge book, got all of Nathans books, theres alot of hidden info in there!! lol

The magazines no bigger than 84mm. I didn't realise the 30-06s were generally shorter COALs than the ,270 - I just assumed they would be longer. Something learnt.

Nathan doesn't seem to have the 8x57 in the cartridge book though?? Either that or I'm blind which is very much a possibility.

I'll re read the knowledge base.

Cheers Guys :)

Re: mauser rebarrel options.
Yeah it really depends what you want from the rifle re: range & animals. Some may say it's a bit boring on this but I personally rate the 8x57 as a very reliable & effective red deer killing calibre. Perhapos you should stick with it?

I built my dad a custom 8x57 last year using a Howa action, worked over the trigger myself & rebarrelled with a Shillen magnum contour 24" barrel. Arthur Cleland Hamilton Gunsmith has the rheemer for 8X57... in fact he bought a new one to do this barrel. I bedded that in a Boyd laminate stock. I have it shooting reloads at half minute for dad. My brother also shoots on old K98 8x57 whcih shoots around 1 minute. Him & I have shot numerous reds with it, they do not get up... Wide bullet, wide wound, quick kill it seems.

These rifles both shoot the well known 150G Interlok soft point very well, & I am in the process of working up a load with the new 170G SST. I will be really interested in how that performs on reds at longer ranges. If anyone has had a play with the 8mm 170G SST I'd be interested to hear how it went. I'd imagine 300 yds should be no problem at all with that bullet??

Re: mauser rebarrel options.
Hi Jon,

Theres a wee story behind the rifle - underfunately not a good one. I was very much looking forward to using this rifle in 8x57, but the barrels not the best and Im not willing to waste money on ammo to test it. Your extremely lucky to have some 170gr sst. I tried very hard to get hold of some before I actually had the rifle and it was impossible. Please reply back in this thread when you've tested them.

Mike - I am the poster on the other forum :) - but thanks for posting this just in case I didn't know. Thats what I love about small foums - People are helpful and go that extra mile.

At the moment the project is on hold. I've just purchased an absoulety stunning 1973/74 ruger m77 in 7x57. I'm going to start a new topic on it soon.

Cheers all :)

Re: mauser rebarrel options.
Yep will let you know how the SST goes in the 8x57s. Am heading down after reds in 4 weeks time so hopefully my brother or father will knock a red skin over with the SSTs. He's got his K98 shooting very well with them.... & that barrel is very old & a bit pitted at the muzzle.

Cheers,

Jon

Re: mauser rebarrel options.
Rebarreled an m98 from 8x57 to
260 ai. Bolt face needed no tooling. Seated A max 140`s .030 beyond max oal giving greater powder capacity and excellent feeding from the magazine. I fire formed .260 brass, wich shot almost match accuracy , then using the same die and backing off when sizing to partial neck sizing only, reloaded to .260 ai potential using a slightly compressed charge of 47 grns MRP. The rifle shoots one hole. Reloading 15 times without annealing.. I used a thick 9/16" washer placed around each casing on the shell holder so I stayed away from the ai`s increased shoulder angle. The ballistics from my 26" bbl are only 125 fps less than the 6.5x284 norma (24"). With a LOT less fire in the pipe! At 600 yds the thing will actually shoot a smiley face on a freshly painted 10" gong. My next one will be in .284 win utilizing the 180 vld`s. R19 @ 45 grns works great as well in the .260 ai. A tad less velocity. Virtually same impacts at 1,000 yds. The 6.5 creed and the plain ole .260 would be great options too. That mauser action is long enough to let you load short action rounds out long.

Re: mauser rebarrel options.
Grant
I own several customised 98 mausers including 6.5x55, 6.5x284 and 6mm dasher
if I were to do a rifle for what you are saying it would be used for I would pick the 6.5x55 or 7x57
I have done the 6.5x55 for the same reasons as what you want, it fits the bill for that perfectly, mine is a magnum sporter weight 26in barrel #4 that I mainly shoot 140gr projectiles out of, I don't understand why your smith says there could be feeding issues, the 98 mauser will feed anything, even short 6mm br cases without projectiles, my 6.5x55 was a 243 before being rebarreled and I do polish up the feed rails to get the cases to feed perfectly straight but once the cases slip up behind the claw extractor they feed straight in.
I also have a 6.5x284 for getting out longer. but it would be a waste if you were wanting it for a 300m carry rifle IMO, they do perform though, mine is pushing 140gr bergers at 2950ish fps out of a 27inch varmint tube,
they are no more a barrel burner than other long distance calibers
I dropped a fallow doe last week with it at 650y

what I would advise is if doing a mauser go to a smith who likes to do them, you will be surprised how well you can get them to shoot for not a lot of canga with the right smith, I would also use the best barrel and trigger you can afford

Re: mauser rebarrel options.
Funny how things come together, sometimes. Just last weekend, a family friend asked me to handle the disposal of her hubby's collection. In it were some fabulous pieces, but the one that caught my eye was a M98 in 7X57. It's just a barreled action, but all the parts are there. It's ugly, surface rusted (which will probably wipe away with WD40) and in my eyes, perfect.

But what calibre rifle to make? This is going to take some thinking.

Re: mauser rebarrel options.
Hi G Dog,

I've just finished working up the 170G SST in my Dad's custom 8x57. Got it grouping 0.55 MOA. Will be effective out to 600 yds Nathan tells me. I''ll let you know how it goes on reds later this year. I'd say they'll be a very emphattic killer based on how the 150g Interloks work.

Re the 7x57, I'm in the process of rebarrelling my old Obendorf Swede 6.5x55 in 7X57 with Grant at Trueflight.

Cheers,

Jon

[b]new to forum.
If you want something a little different that will work on anything from chipmunks to moose, why not reem your Mauser to 8mm-06. Bullets available 125 - 250 gr.

Re: mauser rebarrel options.
I would still go for the 7x57. I, as well as both my sons have shot elk, moose, mule deer, whitetail deer and bear with ours. I use it quite often when I need a light rifle. It shoots the 162 grain A-Max as well as the newer ELD-M 162 grain pills into 1/2 moa from bipod or bench.

It is however, not a Mauser action but one of the old Remington Classics in an HS Precision stock with a decent scope.

Re: mauser rebarrel options.
Hi G Dog,

Re 170G SST in my dads custom 8x57, got it shooting 1/2 MOA. So the bullet is good for accuracy. Just gotta chrono the load, do a final sight in & then build a drop chart for her.

I'll be using it for reds next spring (prob close range stuff) so will let you know how the bullet performs. I'd say it will be reasonably efficient.... ;-)

Cheers
Jon
