.224 Cal - Hornady V-Max

.223 Hornady 53 grain V-Max (factory)

This rugged billy goat was taken with a .223 utilizing Hornady's 53gr V-Max factory ammunition and was shot at a range of around 55 yards.

Hit front on, the projectile entered at the base of the goats neck, just above the brisket.

A large amount of vital organ damage ensured this was a quick and clean kill. The V-Max is not designed for use on game of this size so it cannot be expected to penetrate to any great extent. With cross body shots, the fragments of the V-Max will generally arrest in the offside chest. The 60 grain V-Max tends to give superior performance due to the slight increase in SD combined with a slight reduction in muzzle and therefore impact velocities.

Fragments in the chest wall (leg removed). This shows the extent of penetration with this very small bullet.
